Hendersonville Community Co-Op Wins National Award

Hendersonville, NC – The Hendersonville Community Co-Op, built by Cooper Construction Company of Hendersonville, NC, has been recognized by Varco Pruden Buildings, one of the nation’s largest building-solutions providers. Varco Pruden is a division of BlueScope Buildings North America, Inc., and has a network of more than 1,000 builders across the United States and Canada.

The highly competitive Hall of Fame Awards are presented annually to the independent authorized VP builders whose work reflects innovation and excellence though the integration of VP building systems, products, architectural appearance, end use and design. The projects include a range of industrial, commercial, retail and municipal projects.

The Hendersonville Co-Op was selected as a Retail Category Winner and also won the category's highest honor as Best of Category. Completed in the spring of 2015 the Co-Op is a more than 8,000 square foot building located on Spartanburg Highway in Hendersonville, NC. The expansive store features retail space, a spacious deli, hot and cold self-serve stations as well as a dining area. A community space in the adjacent building houses administration offices and a 50-person classroom for classes and workshops.

Designed by ARCA Design of Asheville, NC and built with sustainability in mind, the Co-Op features many sustainable features. For example, the project includes recycled materials from an existing building that was located on the construction site. In addition reclaimed wood material was utilized to prevent the need for virgin material. The ceiling houses large skylights and accurately placed store front windows, for natural daylight and views. Exterior metal roof and wall panel colors were chosen for the high reflective properties to reduce as much solar gain as possible. In efforts to conserve water, there are two large cisterns on the grounds to collect rain water from the roof to irrigate a demonstration garden and landscaping.

“The Hall of Fame awards provide an extraordinary opportunity to celebrate and recognize exceptional builders. These winners reflect the broad scope of capabilities and variety of end-use possibilities for buildings constructed by our builder network. VP builders consistently produce incredible results for their clients,” said Chuck Haslebacher, president of Varco Pruden.
