8,512 SF New Building, 256 SF Addition

Cooper Construction built the YouTheatre Education Center at Flat Rock Playhouse in Flat Rock, North Carolina, the State Theatre of North Carolina.

Rock came out of the ground before any of the building went up, and Cooper sequenced the work around the Playhouse's production calendar.

The two-story building is 8,512 square feet and holds a music room, an elementary classroom and further classrooms, offices, a foyer, and a dance studio on a sprung floor with ballet barres and mirrored walls. Finishes run to poplar bark siding outside and quarter-sawn red oak trim and doors inside, with ceramic tile and granite in the restrooms and an HVAC system quiet enough for a performance.

It runs today as Playhouse Jr., with year-round classes, summer camps and youth performances. Cooper returned later for a 256 square foot addition. The Playhouse is Cooper's neighbor in Flat Rock.
