Project Scope

9,450 SF Covered Court Structure, Court Resurfacing

Cooper Construction design-built a roof over the outdoor basketball courts at Camp Pinewood, a private summer camp on Orr's Camp Road in Hendersonville, North Carolina.

The roof is a steel building from Varco Pruden, 90 feet by 105 feet, standing 20 feet at the eaves and open on all four sides. It covers 9,450 square feet of court. Cooper drew the plans, an outside engineer checked and sealed them, and Cooper's crew set the steel frame on new concrete footings and piers.

The crew hit bad ground under those footings twice. When the first trenches opened, the soil was too soft to carry the frame, so the crew dug it out, laid drainage pipe, and filled back with stone. As the footings moved along, they hit old tree-stump holes and more soft ground, and the crew dug out again and added a French drain to carry water away from the footings. The camp approved each fix as it came up, and the schedule held.

With the frame up, Cooper resurfaced and restriped the courts and hung four glass-backboard goals. Work started December 20, 2005, and the covered courts were finished on May 10, 2006, the date the contract set.
