Case Study

Blue Ridge Community College Spearman Addition

Industry

Project Location

Flat Rock, NC

Project Scope

3,100 SF Expansion

Cooper Construction built the addition to the Spearman Building at Blue Ridge Community College in Flat Rock, North Carolina, in masonry.

A teaching auto shop needs more services than a working one. Compressed air, natural gas piping, exhaust fans and ductwork, radiant heaters, high bay lighting, cord reels, IT, eyewash stations and air compressors all went in, on top of new plumbing fixtures and piping.

The addition is 3,100 square feet on a 65,400 square foot building. It holds new automotive bays with overhead doors and a paint booth, and supports the college's collision repair, refinishing and welding programs. Existing restrooms were demolished and rebuilt as gang restrooms, with a new storage room alongside.

Site work brought in new underground utilities and an oil and water separator, with fine grading and hardscaping around it.

Cooper returned to Spearman in 2023 for the HVAC, rebuilding the rooftop unit with a new motor, bearings and belts and adding two Carrier fan coil units, a Carrier packaged unit with a matching air damper, BACnet-capable thermostats, starters and controls, and new exhaust fans.
