Cooper Construction designed and built the replacement facility for AppleWedge Packers & Cider in Hendersonville, North Carolina after fire destroyed their cold storage, packing and cider operation in January.

The calendar set everything. Cooper developed the floor plans and exterior elevations against what the operation needed and what the harvest allowed, then built the 52,500 square foot pre-engineered building that put the whole business back under one roof: the packing line, cider processing, separate coolers for raw and packaged fruit, a two-story office, breakrooms and restrooms.

Cooper's own HVAC crews designed and installed the climate control and the chillers. Apple processing does not want one condition throughout. Cider processing, raw fruit storage and the packaged product coolers each hold their own, with heating and cooling across the rest of the production floor. ChillX hydronic air handlers with 20 kW and 10 kW electric heat carry the chilled side, with Trane units, tube heaters, exhaust hoods and fans, and roughly 340 feet of gas piping and 220 feet of glycol-charged chilled water piping through the plant.
